Electric Baby Swing: How to Set It Up, Clean It and Fix It

by ,

A well-adjusted electric baby swing settles a baby in a few minutes; badly adjusted or badly set up, it irritates them or stays still at the worst moment. This guide brings together what parents ask us most after buying: what to check when it stops rocking, how to set it up day to day and how to look after it so it lasts. The examples are based on our ALPHA, AVA, EMY and SPARKY models, but the method applies to most swings on the market.

Before first use: the five checks

Most “faults” in the first few days are small assembly oversights. Two minutes are enough to rule them out.

  • The floor: a flat, hard surface, never a bed, a sofa, a table or a thick rug.
  • The locking: seat fully clicked onto the base, transport or blocking latch released.
  • The power supply: adapter plugged in at both ends; on a battery model, batteries the right way round.
  • The harness: adjusted while the seat is empty, snug without pressing on the tummy.
  • The weight: our swings are used from birth up to 9 kg (from 3 kg for the SPARKY).

Swing no longer rocking? The causes to check, in order

A swing that stops or won't start is rarely broken. Check these points, from the most common to the rarest, before concluding it has failed.

1. The power supply

The socket, a switched-off power strip, an adapter not pushed fully into the swing: this is by far the most common cause. If everything is plugged in but nothing responds, unplug it for a moment and plug it back in, which is often enough to restart the electronics. On a battery model, weak batteries slow the rocking down before it stops completely, so change them all at the same time. And never leave used batteries inside a device that you also plug into the mains.

2. The timer has run out

A swing that stops “by itself” after a set time is working normally: that is the timer. Restart it or choose a different duration.

3. A lock or latch is blocking the mechanism

Some swings have a lock that holds the seat still for transport or for use as a stationary bouncer. If it stays engaged, the motor runs without moving the seat, or the seat doesn't move at all. For the ALPHA, this short video shows how to unlock the mechanism.

4. It rocks when empty, but not with baby in it

A seat not properly clipped on, a toy wedged between the seat and the base or a baby sitting crooked is enough to block the movement. Take baby out, unclip the seat, check nothing is in the way, then click it back in. Put baby back in the centre of the seat. The SPARKY adapts its speed to the child's weight: a very light baby, or one close to the limit, can produce a weaker rocking motion.

5. The floor is not level

A thick rug, a sloping floor or one foot resting on a threshold will slow the rocking. Test it on a hard, flat surface.

6. The remote control or Bluetooth

If the swing responds to its buttons but not to the remote, change the remote's battery and aim it at the sensor with nothing in the way. If the music stops, disconnect and reconnect the smartphone: a swing can often only be paired with one device at a time.

It makes a noise or squeaks

A faint motor sound is normal; a squeak or a repeated click is not. Check that no crumbs have got into the joints, that the swing is stable and that the cover isn't rubbing against the base. Never use oil or lubricant: it attracts dust and damages the plastic parts.

When to contact customer service

If it still won't start, gets hot, smells of burning or has a cracked part, stop using it and contact our customer service with your order number and, if possible, a short video of the problem. Don't open the base yourself: you could hurt yourself and lose the warranty.

Setting up your swing day to day

The right setting is not the strongest one: it is the one that matches how baby is feeling at that moment.

Speed and rocking mode

Always start on speed 1, wait a minute and only go up one notch if baby is still unsettled. A newborn is used to the slow, steady movements of the womb; higher speeds are better suited to older babies. Also avoid changing rhythm every thirty seconds, as each change wakes up their attention again. The ALPHA, the EMY and the SPARKY offer 5 speeds, the AVA 5 swing amplitudes. The EMY adds 3 rocking modes, one of which reproduces the natural movement of a parent's arms, on a 360° swivelling seat.

Melodies, nature sounds and white noise

Melodies suit calm, awake moments; for falling asleep, choose a continuous sound with no “end of the tune” to make baby jump. The ALPHA offers 6 melodies, 2 nature sounds and 2 white noises, the AVA 6 melodies and 2 nature sounds, the EMY 6 melodies and 4 nature sounds, the SPARKY 12 melodies. Keep the volume low, since the speaker is very close to baby's ears. With the Bluetooth on the ALPHA, the AVA and the EMY, you can also play the lullaby baby already knows from your phone.

The timer

It is the most useful and least used setting: 8, 15 or 30 minutes on the ALPHA, the AVA and the EMY, and 10, 20 or 30 minutes on the SPARKY. It stops the swing running long after baby has fallen asleep and avoids getting baby used to falling asleep only while moving. For soothing, 8 or 10 minutes is often enough.

The motion sensor

The ALPHA and the AVA have one. On the AVA, it automatically restarts the rocking at speed 1 when baby cries or wriggles. Handy, as long as you keep it on a low speed and never treat it as a monitor: it reacts to movement, not breathing, and does not replace an adult being there. The AVA also has a swivelling seat and a 5-point harness.

Backrest, winter mode and summer mode

Recline the backrest more for a newborn or a rest, and raise it for an alert baby who wants to watch. The ALPHA, the EMY and the SPARKY have a 2-position backrest. The ALPHA also has two textile configurations: a thick cushion for winter and a breathable mesh seat for summer. Switch to summer mode as soon as the room gets warm: a baby who is too hot becomes restless and wakes up.

Mains or batteries

The ALPHA, the AVA and the EMY run on mains power with the adapter supplied, so plan for a socket nearby. The SPARKY runs on the USB cable supplied or on 4 AA batteries, so it can be used away from a socket, and it folds very easily.

Looking after your swing so it lasts

Washing the cover

On our models the fabric is machine washable, at 30 °C for the AVA and the EMY. First remove the soft toys, small parts and head cushion if they are removable, close the fasteners and hook-and-loop strips, and use a gentle detergent without scented softener. Dry it flat or on an airer, never on a radiator, as direct heat distorts the foam. Only put the cover back on when it is completely dry, otherwise the foam soon smells musty. Between washes, dab a fresh stain with a damp sponge, from the edge towards the centre.

Cleaning the frame and caring for the power supply

Wipe the frame with a soft, slightly damp cloth, without abrasive products or alcohol, and never pour water onto the base, which houses the motor. Regularly vacuum up the crumbs around the stand and the joints, as over time they slow the mechanism down. Don't let the cable run under furniture, unplug the adapter by the plug and not the wire, and only use the adapter supplied: a “universal” charger may not deliver the right voltage.

The routine we recommend:

  • after every spill: spot-clean with a sponge;
  • every week: wipe the frame, vacuum around the base;
  • every month, or as soon as it is dirty: wash the cover at 30 °C;
  • every month: check the harness, buckles and cable.

Safety, storage and a second baby

Baby is always strapped in, the swing stays on the floor and an adult stays close by. It is not a place for long sleep: if baby falls deeply asleep, move them flat on their back into their crib. As soon as they try to sit up alone or approach 9 kg, it is time to stop. We cover session length and age in When should you put a baby in a swing? and Electric baby swing: up to what age should you use it?

Before putting it away, wash and dry the cover, remove the batteries and keep the adapter with the swing, in a dry place. Before using it again or passing it on, check the harness, buckles, frame and cable, and do a test run with the seat empty.

FAQ – Setting up and caring for an electric baby swing

Why does my swing stop by itself?

Most of the time the timer has reached its programmed duration. If it stops earlier, check the power supply, how the seat is clicked in and whether the floor is level.

My new swing doesn't move. Is it faulty?

Rarely. Check that no latch is blocking the mechanism, that the seat is properly clicked in and that the adapter is plugged in at both ends.

Which speed should I use for a newborn?

The lowest one. A newborn is soothed by a slow, steady movement.

Can the cover go in the washing machine?

Yes, at 30 °C on the AVA and the EMY, with a gentle detergent, dried flat and away from a radiator.

Can I use a baby swing without a power socket?

Yes with the SPARKY, which runs on USB or 4 AA batteries. The ALPHA, the AVA and the EMY run on mains power.

Should I lubricate a squeaky swing?

No. Oil attracts dust and damages the plastic parts. Clean the joints and contact customer service if the noise persists.

In short

When the swing stops rocking, six checks in order solve most cases. Day to day, simple settings — low speed, continuous sound at low volume, a short timer — and simple care are enough to make it last for several children.
